PHOENIXVILLE'S SKYLAR KELLY IS IN 'GODSPELL' AT THE MEDIA THEATRE THRU AUGUST 27

The Media Theatre revitalizes the classic musical “Godspell” now through August 27. The show, with music by Stephen Schwartz and a book by John Michael Tebelak, features a cast of children, teens, and adults as the followers of Jesus while they humorously act out his parables from the Book of Matthew.

Skylar Kelly plays one of the ensemble members, often referred to as The Disciples. She is 13 years old and attends Villa Maria Academy, where she will enter the 8th grade in September. From Phoenixville, she’s been seen previously on The Media Theatre stage in the summer “Vocalist Junior” competition, although this is her first full-fledged production with Media.

Skylar has also been seen in “James and The Giant Peach” and “Godspell Jr” with Malvern Prep Society, as well as in “Hamlet” at Villa Maria Academy.

While Skylar was not alive in the early ‘70’s when “Godspell” premiered off-Broadway, she certainly understands what the show is all about, and why its message remains vital today. “The musical “Godspell” is an inspirational and magical show,” she said. “The parables are retold through song and dance and stories that are acted out. The show is all about Jesus’ message of peace, love, and acceptance.”

“The musical has the power to appeal to all ages, backgrounds, religions and cultures because of the messages that are communicated,” she continued. “It provides life lessons that everyone can learn from.”

Her favorite part of the show is the song Jesus sings with Judas, “All ForThe Best”. “The scene is bubbly and upbeat while the words of the song depict, in a lighthearted way, the conflict between the two men.”

“This production of “Godspell” is incredibly unique,” she explained. “It’s got somewhat of a sports theme, actors of all ages, and interesting direction. Using a sports and game theme worked, and it’s really awesome!”

“Godspell” at The Media Theatre is directed by Roger Ricker, with music direction by Ben Kapilow. Austy Hicks plays the role of Jesus. For tickets, call 610-891-0100 or visit mediatheatre.org
